Two ways to buy

Stock vs custom hair systems.

A stock hair system is pre made in standard sizes and shades, so you can have one fitted quickly. A custom system is built from scratch to a template of your head, in your exact color, density, and hairline, which takes longer to make but almost always blends more convincingly. For most men who want a result that holds up close, custom is worth the wait, and stock earns its place as a fast start or a backup unit.

What each one actually is

Stock means the unit already exists. It was made to common dimensions and a range of standard colors, it sits ready to go, and it is fitted and cut in once it is matched to you. Because nothing has to be manufactured, the wait is short.

Custom means the unit is made for you after you order it. We take a template of your head, specify the base, the color, the density, the hair type, and the way the hairline is built, then it is produced to that order. Nothing about the shape or the shade is a compromise between your head and the nearest available size.

Fit and coverage

Fit is where the difference shows first. A stock base is cut down to your area of loss, which works well when your pattern is close to a standard shape. When it is not, you are asking a fixed outline to cover a head it was not shaped to, and the edges are where that gets exposed.

A custom base follows the actual border of your own hair, so the join sits where it should and there is no reaching or gapping at the perimeter. On heads with an unusual pattern, a recession that is uneven side to side, or a large area to cover, that tailored outline is the whole game.

Color and hairline match

Real hair is rarely one flat color. It carries a blend of tones, often some grey, and it shifts from the temples to the crown. Stock shades are chosen from a set range, so you take the closest match, and close is usually good but not always exact.

With a custom unit the color is mixed to yours, grey percentage included, and the hairline can be built with the softness and irregularity a natural front has. A stock hairline is built to a general standard, which can read slightly too even under real scrutiny. If you wear your hair back off your face, that front edge is the detail people notice, and it is the strongest argument for going custom.

  • Stock color is the nearest match from a fixed range
  • Custom color is mixed to your tone and grey percentage
  • Stock hairlines follow a general build
  • Custom hairlines are shaped to your face with natural irregularity

Turnaround and getting started

This is where stock genuinely wins. If you want hair sooner rather than later, a stock unit can often be fitted in a matter of days, because the making step is already done. A custom order has to be manufactured to your specification first, so there is a lead time before your install.

That speed is why stock is a sensible way to start for a lot of men. You can be wearing hair while your first custom unit is being built, learn what you actually like about density and style on a real head rather than in theory, and feed that back into the custom order so it lands closer to right.

Longevity and the cost picture

Lifespan is driven more by the base material, your routine, and your maintenance schedule than by whether the unit was stock or custom. A fine base that gives an invisible front wears faster than a sturdier one whether you bought it off the shelf or ordered it, so do not assume custom lasts longer by default.

On cost, the honest version is that a stock unit usually carries a lower starting outlay because it is mass produced, while a custom unit reflects the work of building something to order. Neither number tells the whole story, because how long a unit lasts and how you rotate your systems both feed into what you actually spend over a year. We walk through that math for your situation at a consultation rather than quoting a figure cold.

How we usually guide the decision in our chair

There is no universal answer, only the right call for your head and how you live. If your pattern is close to standard, you want to start quickly, or you want a second unit to rotate, a stock system does the job well. If you want the most convincing possible front, you have an unusual pattern, or your color is hard to match, custom is the honest recommendation.

Plenty of men run both over time. A custom unit as the everyday one, a stock unit as the backup that keeps them covered on maintenance days or before a rushed event. We would rather set that up properly than sell you the more expensive option for its own sake.

Real work

This is what it looks like.

Before and after: a client with a receding hairline, then with a natural curly hairline after his hair replacement system was installed.

Questions, answered.

Is a custom hair system always better than a stock one?

Not always. Custom gives the closest fit, color, and hairline, which usually means a more convincing result. But if your pattern is close to standard and you want to start fast, a well fitted stock unit can look excellent. The install and the cut matter more than the label.

How much longer does a custom system take to get?

A stock unit can often be fitted within days because it already exists. A custom unit has to be made to your specification first, so there is a manufacturing lead time before your install. We give you a realistic timeline when you order.

Can I start with stock and move to custom later?

Yes, and many men do exactly that. Starting on a stock unit lets you wear hair right away and learn what you like about density and style, which makes the first custom order land much closer to right.

Does stock or custom last longer?

Neither by default. Lifespan comes down to the base material, your attachment, and how well you keep your maintenance schedule, not whether the unit was ready made or built to order.
