The short physiology of it
A hair unit is attached to the surface of your scalp with tape or adhesive. It does not go into the skin, and it does not sit on the follicles hard enough to starve them. Your follicles are fed from underneath, deep in the scalp, and nothing about wearing a system reaches down to them or shuts that off.
So the hair you have grows the way it always has. If you had light growth around the sides and back before, you still have it under the unit. The system is a layer on top of a living scalp, not a cap that seals it off, and treating it that way is how we keep everything underneath healthy.
Two kinds of growth to keep separate
It helps to split this into two things, because men often blur them together and then worry about the wrong one.
- Your own remaining hair, which keeps growing on its normal cycle underneath and around the base
- The hair on the unit itself, which is real hair but is not attached to you, so it does not grow back if it is cut or it sheds
Why growth changes the fit over a few weeks
This is the practical part. When we install a unit, the base sits flush and the attachment is fresh. As the weeks pass, your own hair grows out at the edges and underneath, and that new growth lifts and loosens the bond a little. Nothing has failed. The scalp is just doing what a scalp does.
That is exactly why a system is not a fit-and-forget thing. The growth is predictable, so the maintenance schedule is predictable. You come in, we lift the unit, clean the scalp and the base, deal with the new growth, and reattach on a clean surface. It is closer to a standing appointment than a repair.
What a maintenance visit actually does about growth
In our chair, a maintenance visit is built around this cycle. We remove the unit gently, clear the old adhesive, and get a proper look at the scalp underneath, which matters because it is the one time the skin is fully exposed and we can check it is in good shape.
Then we handle the growth. Your own hair that has come through at the perimeter gets managed so it blends rather than fights the system, and the base is cleaned so it bonds cleanly again. Nico and the team also re-blend the unit into your own hair at the sides and back, since your growth there has moved on since the last visit and the cut has to keep up.
Does the system stop or damage the growth?
Worn and maintained properly, a hair system is a surface attachment and the hair underneath keeps its normal cycle. The risk people are really asking about comes from neglect, not from the system itself. If a unit is left on far too long, if adhesive is never cleared, or if the scalp is never allowed to breathe and get cleaned, that is when you invite irritation.
That is the honest reason we hold you to a maintenance rhythm instead of selling you a unit and waving goodbye. The schedule is not upsell. It is the thing that keeps the scalp underneath clean and lets your own hair keep doing its job.
What this means for you day to day
Practically, you do not have to do anything special to let the hair grow. It grows on its own. Your part of the deal is following the at-home routine we give you and coming in on schedule so the growth gets managed before it starts pushing the fit around.
If you ever feel the bond lifting sooner than expected, that is usually growth and oil doing their work, not a sign something is wrong. Tell us, and we adjust the interval to match how fast you actually grow, because that rate is personal and worth dialing in rather than guessing at.

Does wearing a hair system stop my own hair from growing?
No. The unit attaches to the surface of your scalp, not to the follicles, so the hair you have keeps growing on its normal cycle. What you are managing is that growth over time, which is what maintenance visits are for.
If my hair keeps growing, why does the fit loosen?
Because new growth at the edges and underneath lifts the base a little as the weeks pass. It is predictable, not a failure. We clear it, clean the scalp and base, and reattach on a fresh surface at your maintenance appointment.
How often do I need to come in because of growth?
It depends on how fast you grow and which attachment you wear, so the interval is personal. We set a rhythm at the start and adjust it once we see how your own growth actually behaves.
Will the hair on the unit grow back if it is cut?
No. The hair on the system is real hair but it is not connected to you, so it does not regrow the way your own hair does. That is why the unit is cut and blended carefully and replaced on its own schedule.
